AI diagnosis support for dental practices

TL;DR

AI diagnosis support gives dentists a real-time second opinion on radiographs, perio charts, and clinical photos — flagging caries, bone loss, calculus, and anomalies in seconds. It does not replace the clinician; it raises the floor on consistency, reduces missed findings, and shortens the path from image to documented treatment plan. Nurvivo Dental delivers this inside one PHIPA-aligned workflow, hosted on AWS Canada (Toronto).

Overview

AI diagnosis support uses computer vision and clinical language models to assist dentists during exams. It analyzes bitewings, panoramics, and periapicals, highlights regions of interest, and proposes findings the dentist confirms or rejects. The dentist remains the decision-maker — AI handles pattern recognition and documentation so clinical time goes back to the patient.

The problem this solves

Manual radiograph review is fast but inconsistent. Findings get missed under time pressure, junior clinicians lack a sanity check, and the gap between 'I see it on the X-ray' and 'it's written into the chart with a code and plan' adds minutes to every operatory. Multiply that across a day and a practice loses hours.

How it works

1. Image capture

Radiographs and intraoral photos flow into the platform from your sensor or imaging bridge. No manual upload, no second login.

2. AI analysis

A trained model identifies caries, bone loss, calculus, periapical lesions, and restorations. Each finding has a confidence score and a visual overlay on the image.

3. Clinician review

The dentist accepts, edits, or dismisses each finding. Nothing is auto-charted without explicit confirmation — the clinician is always the source of truth.

4. Documentation + plan

Confirmed findings populate the chart with the correct ODA codes and feed directly into the treatment plan and patient handout.

Benefits

  • Fewer missed findings across high-volume hygiene days
  • Consistent second opinion for associates and new grads
  • Faster path from radiograph to documented plan
  • Better patient case acceptance with visual overlays
  • Audit trail of every AI suggestion and clinician decision

The Nurvivo approach

Nurvivo Dental ships radiograph AI inside the same chart your team already uses — no separate app, no extra license. Findings drop into the SOAP/DARE note with ODA codes, the treatment plan, and a patient-friendly visual summary in one flow. Hosted on AWS Canada (Toronto), PHIPA-aligned, with a zero-training policy on your clinical data.

Clinical workflow: before, during, after

A step-by-step view of what changes — and what doesn't — across a normal patient visit.

Before the visit

  1. Patient consents to digital radiography and to AI-assisted clinical decision support as part of standard intake.
  2. Sensors and imaging bridge are connected to Nurvivo Dental; per-provider preferences (which findings to surface, confidence thresholds) are configured once.
  3. Role-based access is set so only treating clinicians and authorized staff can view AI overlays.

During the visit

  1. Radiograph is captured as normal and streams into the chart view within seconds.
  2. AI overlays appear with confidence indicators for caries, bone loss, calculus, periapical lesions, and restorations.
  3. Dentist accepts, edits, or dismisses each finding — nothing is auto-charted.
  4. Confirmed findings populate the SOAP/DARE note, ODA codes, and treatment plan in one click.

After the visit

  1. A patient-friendly visual summary is generated for case presentation and consent.
  2. Every AI suggestion and clinician decision is written to an immutable audit log.
  3. Raw radiograph storage follows your practice's existing imaging retention policy; AI metadata is retained for medico-legal traceability.
  4. Per-site accuracy metrics are reviewed periodically to monitor model performance in your operatory.

Privacy, consent & data handling

Nurvivo Dental is PHIPA-aligned and built so the dentist remains the Health Information Custodian. Radiograph analysis runs entirely in Canada, data is never used to train AI models, and every access event is logged.

Consent

Patient consent for AI-assisted diagnosis support is captured as part of your standard digital-radiography consent, with plain-language wording your practice can adapt. Consent is recorded per patient and revocable at any time; revocation stops new AI processing immediately and is logged for audit.

Retention

Radiographs follow your practice's existing imaging retention policy (typically 10 years post-last-visit per provincial college guidance). AI metadata — confidence scores, overlays, clinician decisions — is retained alongside the chart for medico-legal traceability and deleted when the underlying chart is destroyed.

Data handling

All radiograph processing happens on infrastructure hosted in AWS Canada (Toronto). Data does not leave Canadian jurisdiction. Access is role-based, encrypted in transit (TLS 1.2+) and at rest (AES-256), and gated by SSO/MFA. Nurvivo Dental signs PHIPA-aligned agreements with each practice and operates a zero-training policy: your clinical data is never used to train external or internal AI models without an explicit, separate opt-in.

Frequently asked questions

Does AI replace the dentist's diagnosis?+

No. AI diagnosis support is a second opinion, not a replacement. The clinician confirms or rejects every finding before it enters the chart. The dentist remains the licensed decision-maker and the legal author of the diagnosis.

Which practices are eligible to use AI diagnosis support?+

Any licensed dental practice in Canada with digital radiography can use Nurvivo Dental's diagnosis support — general, multi-location, specialty (endo, perio, oral surgery), and DSOs. There is no minimum operatory count or chair volume requirement.

How accurate is AI caries and bone-loss detection in 2026?+

Leading models reach sensitivity comparable to experienced clinicians for interproximal caries and bone-loss measurement on bitewings and panoramics. Reported sensitivity for interproximal caries on bitewings is typically in the 0.80–0.90 range, with the biggest practical gain coming from consistency across long days rather than peak per-image accuracy.

How are AI findings validated?+

Models are trained and benchmarked against radiographs labeled by multiple licensed dentists, with held-out test sets and ongoing performance monitoring. Every clinician decision in production is logged, which lets the platform measure real-world accuracy by site and by finding type.

What happens when the AI flags something the dentist disagrees with?+

The dentist dismisses the finding with one click. Nothing is auto-charted. Dismissals are logged so the model's per-site performance can be reviewed — but they never enter the patient's clinical record.

Is AI diagnosis support PHIPA compliant?+

Compliance depends on the vendor, not the technology. Nurvivo Dental is PHIPA-aligned: Canadian data residency in AWS Canada (Toronto), signed PHIPA-aligned agreements with each practice, role-based access with SSO/MFA, encryption in transit (TLS 1.2+) and at rest (AES-256), full audit logging of every access event, and a zero-training policy on your clinical data.

Are radiographs sent outside Canada for processing?+

Not for Nurvivo Dental. Radiograph analysis runs entirely on infrastructure hosted in AWS Canada (Toronto). Your patients' images do not leave Canadian jurisdiction. Several international vendors process clinical data in the US or EU — verify hosting region with any vendor in writing before signing.

How is patient consent for AI handled?+

Consent for AI-assisted diagnosis support is captured as part of your standard digital-radiography consent, with plain-language wording you can adapt to your practice. Consent is recorded per patient, revocable at any time, and revocation halts new AI processing immediately. Every consent event is written to the audit log.

How long is radiograph and AI data retained?+

Radiograph images follow your practice's existing imaging retention policy — typically 10 years past last visit per provincial college guidance. AI metadata (overlays, confidence scores, clinician decisions) is retained alongside the chart for medico-legal traceability and is deleted when the underlying chart is destroyed.

Is patient data used to train the AI model?+

No. Nurvivo Dental operates a zero-training policy: your clinical data is never used to train external or internal AI models without an explicit, separate written opt-in. This is non-negotiable for PHIPA alignment.

How does this fit into a normal exam workflow?+

Radiographs flow in from your sensor as they always do. The AI overlays appear within seconds in the same chart view. The dentist reviews, accepts, or rejects, and confirmed findings populate the SOAP note, ODA codes, and treatment plan — no second login, no copy-paste.

Can patients see the AI findings?+

Yes — Nurvivo Dental generates a patient-friendly visual summary with the overlays the dentist confirmed, which materially improves case acceptance.

Do I need new sensors or hardware?+

No. Nurvivo Dental works with the radiograph images your existing sensors and imaging software already produce — no hardware replacement required.

Who is liable if the AI misses a finding?+

The treating dentist remains the licensed decision-maker and clinical author of record, exactly as they are without AI. The AI is a documented decision-support tool, with every suggestion and dismissal logged for medico-legal traceability.
